Created to challenge the stigma around mental health. Lots of things in healthcare are meant to be disposable. But our doctors can’t be one of them.
Celebrating Lives. Demanding Change.
Four portraits crafted from disposable medical equipment—many from the doctor’s own families and colleagues. All designed to celebrate their lives and protest the reasons they were lost. Physicians are required to disclose their mental health status for their licenses and insurance. These barriers stop thousands of doctors from getting the help they deserve.
On September 13 —National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, the Disposables united health leadership across the state of Ohio. Dozens of organizations, including The American Medical Association, came together to push for meaningful change to protect its health leaders.
A Breakthrough
Two weeks after our event, the state of Ohio removed mental health questions from the licensing requirement for physicians.
A huge step towards providing our doctors basic protections everyone deserves. The Disposables is now on tour and will appear at the AMA’s national conference. Because there is no much more that needs to be done before our doctors stop being treated as Disposable.
